By Fern Harris – Spring is here, the clocks have gone forwards and the sun is peaking through the clouds. For me, that means one thing: I need to go on a new adventure! This Spring I’m definitely in need of something active to shake me out of those winter blues. Something to get my adrenaline flowing? Something on the coast? One thing’s for certain, it must get me outdoors, get me active and get me exploring!
First things first, where do I want my adventure to take me? Of course, if I stay closer to home, there’s one location that immediately jumps out to me: spectacular Wales. On the Pembrokeshire coast there’s plenty of opportunity for water sport: the dramatic cliffs make this the perfect spot for coasteering (that ticks the adrenaline box) and the waves at top rated beach Rhossili Bay feel as if they were made to surf… Now, since the potential for outdoor adventure only begins at the beach, I can’t forget about what lies further inland. There’s the possibility of canyoning in the Brecon Beacons National Park (adrenaline ☑, outdoors ☑, active ☑), hiking, caving and even rock climbing! I’m spoilt for choice and I love it.
How’s this for a perfect day: surfing the Welsh waves in the morning, exploring picturesque coastal villages and having a delicious lunch of freshly caught fish in the afternoon before finally winding down with some beach yoga, a chill barbeque and Big Blue Beer?! I think I might be onto a winner there…
Looking further afield to Europe, I think Portugal has to be one of the coolest places to get active. I could crank the coasteering up a notch by leaping into swells still pumped up with that winter magic in Sesimbra or even SUP through stunning cave systems and rivers in Sagres.
That’s one way to get outdoors, active and exploring in the most adventurous way possible! With longer days there’s even more time in the sun and I can’t stop daydreaming about stepping off the plane into a warm colourful world of spring flowers, turquoise water and perfect beaches…
For my Portugal adventure I’m picturing a busy day of SUP in West Algarve, a sunset hike along the Rota Vicentina route (I’m a sucker for a perfect sunset) and sampling some delicious Portuguese delicacies.
